JERSEY JAZZ "COMPACT VIEWS"
by Joe Lang
Live at Shanghai Jazz by the Earl May
Quintet opens with Catherine Russell singing "This Joint is Jumpin',"
and from the sound of things it really was. With leader May on
bass, David Glasser on alto sax,
Eddie Locke on drums and Larry Ham on
piano, this is a group that excels at producing one highlight after
another.
May's bass consistently prods and propels his ensemble.
His feature, "Night in Tunisia," is a tour de force.
Locke lays down a bed of time that keeps everyone right there, with a
particular chance to strut his stuff on
"Jumpin' at the
Woodside." Ham delights as a sideman, vocal accompanist, and
soloist.
Dig his work on "My Romance." Glasser is
simply one of the brightest lights playing alto today.
His
original, "Blues for Boz," brings both his composing and
playing talents front and center.
Catherine Russell makes her
debut recording memorable indeed.
She swings with authority,
caresses ballads like "Ghost of Yesterday" and "I Cover
the Waterfront"
with great feeling and maturity, seems right at
home getting
down with the blues on "Back O'Town Blues,"
a song written by
Louis Armstrong and her father, Luis Russell, and invests Billy Taylor's
"I Wish I knew How It Would Feel to Be Free" with a fervid
gospel reading.
This live disc, which has been extremely well
recorded, captures an exciting group playing tight,
creative jazz to an
appreciative audience.
