Blues People

Blues People

“New York Blues” can be described like the global phenomenon that it is: edgy, honest and one-of-a-kind. From Lionel Hampton to Ruth Brown …from Michael Hill to King Solomon Hicks — New York can claim its own unique blues experience.

BLUES People is a NY/NJ blues band featuring...KELTON COOPER (vocals/guitar), MIKE GRIOT (bass), RON THOMPSON (keys) and GENE LAKE (drums). Early comparisons to the Meters, Luther Allison, Keb Mo' and Buddy Guy are starting to roll in!

Having released two promotional singles in 2022 ("The Skin I'm In" and "Troubled Times"), the band has independently released its 2024 debut album "The Skin I'm In".

These seasoned veterans have certainly paid their dues; as individual side men, they have supported a who’s-who of touring “A-listers”, including Sue Foley, Josh Smith, Kool & the Gang, Ruf’s Blues Caravan, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Bo Diddley, Jr. and Michael Hill’s Blues Mob… just to name a few.

BLUES People’s arrival on the global blues scene marks a dynamic shift in the present and future state of blues music… and the culmination of a story over 40 years in the making. Lead singer- guitarist Kelton Cooper and Bassist Mike Griot met as teenagers in rival bands in Orange, NJ… just a stone’s throw from NYC.

Cooper (who played drums, guitar and bass) and Griot (who was a classical cellist and electric bassist) shared early stages on local talent shows. Hungry to play the  music of the time, these inspired teenagers took every opportunity to play their instruments for any who would listen. Whether it was a friend’s basement, garage or backyard — these two talents literally loaded their equipment in shopping carts (if necessary) to the next place they could play their music.

FAST FORWARD (2017): Having separately amassed years of pro touring credits, recording sessions and collaborations with a literal “Who’s Who” in entertainment, Cooper and Griot found themselves back together again — this time in Griot’s live music club in New Jersey. Cooper moonlighted as a sound engineer…as well as continuing his relentless freelance schedule. It was fellow sideman/drummer Gene Lake (David Sanborn/Boz Scaggs/Meshell Ndegeocello) who suggested Cooper should do an original project. Upon presenting this to Griot, Griot agreed, stating “if we become a cover band, lose my number”! This proved to be the catalyst for band’s birth.

THE PANDEMIC (2020): When COVID shut down the music industry, the three musical comrades did what many did: write and record. With access to multiple studios, they began crafting what has now become their “NYC/North Jersey Blues Sound” - while sharing stories of their life and struggles. Their important together work has resulted in their 2024 debut album: “The Skin I’m In”.

Blues People musically explores the effects of the blues on modern American culture on many universal levels... and is a modern chronicle of four "real-life blues brothers" living in THIS time in America... while surviving the NY/NJ-Metro urban landscape.

BLUES People WINS THE NJBS/INTERNATIONAL BLUES CHALLENGE!!

BLUES People was born during the pandemic… but the band members have authentically lived their truths - as lifelong working musicians, producers and recording artists for over 30 years.

After taking the NY-metro area by storm for 4 years with their incredible shows and musicianship, the band has won the North Jersey Blues Society International Blues Challenge in 2023 and 2024… and (in their very first attempt) made the SEMIFINALS in the 2024 Memphis International Blues Challenge!

Doors open at 4:30. Seating times are 5:00-6:15 and 8:35-8:45. Respective performances begin at 7:00 and 9:05 with $5 Entertainment Fee and $40 food & drink minimum per person. Reservations strongly recommended.

El Dorado Slim featuring Scott Sharrard of Little Feat & Gregg Allman Band!

El Dorado Slim featuring Scott Sharrard of Little Feat & Gregg Allman Band!

This is truly a “not to be missed” performance!

Where Bill Graham’s Fillmore East meets Detroit’s Club Mozambique you will find the sounds of NYC’s, Eldorado Slim. Led by Little Feat guitarist, Scott Sharrard, the 6 piece lineup consists of some of NYC’s finest musicians. The band takes it’s name from an obscure Little Feat jam from the early ‘70’s

Sharrard describes Elorado Slim’s mix of 1970’s instrumental covers as a “blend of acid funk and space spirituals.” The band takes their sound and repertoire from one of the richest chapters in American roots music history. Inspired by the consciousness expanding and hypnotic, impovisational funk of the era, music by artists like Grant Green, Eddie Harris, Lonnie Smith, the Crusaders, Cannonball Adderley, King Curtis, Chico Hamilton and Stuff. Eldorado Slim also nods to Scott Sharrard’s work with Greg Allman and Little Feat by occasionally doing their own instrumental interpretations of tunes from those iconic rock & roll songbooks.

Since the fall of 2008, Scott Sharrard has been the touring guitarist for the Gregg Allman Band. He’s been called “One of the best guitarists in the country” by Billboard and “the next Eric Clapton or Mike Bloomfield” by the Indianapolis Star Tribune . Gregg Allman, has high praise for the guitarist. “I know all about guitar players —I’ve seen the very best — and Scott Sharrard is the perfect guitarist for my band. He understands that you don’t need to play just for the sake of playing; Scott isn’t one of those guys who thinks they’re getting paid by the note. He never steps on the vocals, and leaves plenty of room for everyone else to do their thing, but when it’s time to solo, Scott delivers, boy.” This will be the first of a summer series with Scott’s band and every show will be different and amazing!

We will offer seatings at at 6:05 and 8:35for two separate performances at 7:00 and 9:00, respectively, along with a prix fixe menu $85 per person for the 6:05 seating and $75 at the 8:35 plus drinks, tax and gratuity. Each set will be unique. Reservations required!

Born and raised in Seattle, WA, Ted has spent most of his 40+ year career in the New York City area. For 15 years he was musical director for jazz singer Jeanie Bryson, creating arrangements for her and playing on three of her recordings. He had a fruitful 30+ year song-writing collaboration with singer/songwriter Eugene McDaniels (“One Hundred Pounds Of Clay”, “Feel Like Making Love”) writing songs for Nancy Wilson, Les McCann, and Jeanie Bryson recordings. Ted has toured to the far corners of the globe, playing in Brazil, Japan, Greece, and the Netherlands with Jeanie Bryson, and doing two USIA tours to West Africa with jazz singer Dee Daniels. Giacomo Gates with Tomoko Ohno
Apr

6:00 PM18:00

Giacomo Gates with Tomoko Ohno

“Mr. Gates is a solid example of a performer who is doing something that no one else does. He evokes an age (that I would hope is not so terribly bygone) when musicians were entertainers and entertainers were musicians, and a sense of humor was as important as a sense of rhythm.”
Will Friedwald

Giacomo Gates does more than sing “a bunch of songs.” He is truly an entertainer, for all ages and styles, as audiences enjoy the music, the interaction on the bandstand between him and his musicians, the spontaneity, the humor, the stories about the music and composers, along with their relation to everyday life. People are smiling, having a good time, while thoroughly enjoying the music. What usually lacks in most of today’s performances is obviously present … fun!

Tomoko Ohno, an established pianist in the jazz scene in NYC. has been performing with Slide Hampton, Rufus Reid, The Dizzy Gillespie Alumni Big Band, and is the pianist for the Diva Jazz Orchestra. Ms. Ohno has also released albums as a leader in Japan, U.S., and Argentina.

Brilliant bassist, Tim Givens will round out the trio this Sunday evening. Tim has performed with legendary musicians around the world from Leonieke Scheuble to Jimmy Page!

Doors open at 4:30. Performance begins at 6:00 with $5 Entertainment Fee and $25 food & drink minimum per person. Reservations strongly recommended

Cesar Orozco's Kamarata Quartet

“César Orozco manages to make the best combination between Cuban, Jazz and Venezuelan music I ever heard”. Paquito D’Rivera

César Orozco is a Cuban born pianist, violinist, composer, arranger, producer, and educator based in the NYC Tri-State area. In 1997, Orozco traveled from Cuba to Venezuela, where he spent 14 years and developed an important and prolific career. In 2012, Orozco moved to the United States and enrolled with a full tuition Assistantship to The Peabody Institute of John Hopkins University in Baltimore, where he earned a Graduate Performance Diploma (GPD) in Jazz Piano. He also holds a degree in Violin Performance and Ensemble Conducting from the National School of Arts in Havana, Cuba. Since relocating to New York in 2015, Mr. Orozco has become an in-demand pianist. Some of the artists he has worked with include Paquito D’Rivera, Pedrito Martinez, Gary Thomas, Alex Norris, Troy Roberts, Paul Bollenback, Itai Kriss & Telavana, Albita Rodriguez, Guaco, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Luis Enrique, Huascar Barradas, Simon Diaz, and Giovanni Hidalgo just to name a few. He has participated in more than 70 albums including six as a solo artist.

As an arranger and/or composer, Mr. Orozco has been commissioned by The Baltimore School for The Arts, the Chamber String Orchestra from the MCYO at Strathmore in Maryland, The Netherlands Blazers Ensemble (NBE), Raíces Jazz Orchestra from Miami FL, the Venezuela Symphony Orchestra, and the Frankfurt Radio Big Band among others. In 2019, he was nominated for “Best Arrangement” at the 20th Latin Grammy awards for his piece “Imprevisto”, performed and recorded by Pablo Gil & The Raices Jazz Orchestra featuring the great percussionist Tony Succar.

Kamarata Jazz is Orozco's main project, who created it back in 2006 while living in Venezuela. It was originally conceived as a quintet: piano, electric bass, drums, percussion and Venezuelan cuatro. Currently, the group alternates with performances as a trio, quartet, and quintet using a saxophone instead of the cuatro, or eventually also as a sextet including both, cuatro and saxophone. With Kamarata Jazz, Orozco has developed an innovative approach to a fusion of Venezuelan and Cuban traditional music with Jazz and other genres such as flamenco, tango, and bossa nova. The core of the repertoire is based mostly on Orozco’s original compositions, as well as arrangements of well-known Venezuelan and Cuban pieces from the traditional repertoire. César Orozco & Kamarata Jazz discography includes “Son con Pajarillo” (2007, self-release), “Orozcojam” (Guataca, 2010, awarded for Best vocal/Instrumental album at Cubadisco 2012), “No Limits for Tumbao” (Alfi Records, 2015) and the latest one "Rooted Forward", which was released in October, 2020.
