Heralded by jazz writer/critic Dan Morgenstern, "Daryl Sherman, and Boots Maleson are as astute as they come, totally attuned to each other - finishing each other's phrases as they continue swinging in tandem.This versatile trio has been entertaining audiences at Shanghai Jazz for many years and always comes up with something new to surprise and delight.
Boots Maleson is a spectacular bassist based in New York City, who has worked with artists as Milt Jackson, Elvin Jones, Jaki Byard, Archie Shepp, Kenny Barron, Dexter Gordon, Stanley Cowell, Jack Wilson, and Benny Carter. He has played in the Big Bands of Harry James, Jimmy Dorsey, Bob Alexander, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. He has performed for many years with Ronny Whyte, Daryl Sherman and Marlene Verplanck.
Joining Daryl and Boots this evening is guitar great Joe Cohn, The son of Al Cohn,[1] he started to play the guitar in his teens, transcribing from recordings featuring Art Tatum, Thad Jones, and Clifford Brown.[1] Besides taking lessons, he attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he also played with Nick Brignola and Bob Mover.[1] He is self-taught on double bass and performed with musicians at hotels in the Catskill Mountains.[1] He continued to play bass in New York City with Freddy Cole and Buddy DeFranco.[1] Beginning in 1984, he played guitar for several years in the Artie Shaw Orchestra led by Dick Johnson in addition to learning the trumpet.[1] He recorded and toured with his father, saxophonist Al Cohn.[1] In the 1990s, he was a member of the Carmen Leggio quartet with Bill Crow.[
