MIND BLOWING LATIN DUET WITH CESAR OROZCO & JORGE GLEM'S STRINGWISE

MIND BLOWING LATIN DUET WITH CESAR OROZCO & JORGE GLEM'S STRINGWISE

Virtuoso Venezuelan cuatro player Jorge Glem, has joined forces with Cuban/Venezuelan pianist, composer and arranger César Orozco, to record their first album as a duo entitled “Stringwise,”released worldwide on February 6, 2019. After working together in several projects for many years while living in Venezuela, these long-time partners in music have reunited again now in New York City and decided to put together this unprecedented and original duo. On this album, both performers explore their instruments to the fullest by mixing the rhythmic richness and energy of traditional Latin American genres such as Venezuelan joropo, merengue, and Cuban son with a repertoire of worldwide renowned masterpieces from pop and jazz. Stringwise is also the first album recorded only with a Venezuelan cuatro and piano. This particular instrumentation, along with the constant presence of jazz elements, such as improvisation, creates a homogeneous and coherent sound despite the varied mixture of songs and genres involved in the recording. The end result is a fascinating journey full of rhythms, melodies and harmonies that listeners will enjoy through 7 covers, one piece of Venezuelan folklore, and 3 original songs, all produced and arranged by both Glem and Orozco.

According to Cuban legendary saxophonist and clarinetist Paquito D’Rivera, “César Orozco manages to make the best combination between Cuban, Jazz and Venezuelan music I ever heard”. Orozco, who was born and raised in Cuba, moved to Venezuela in 1998, where he developed an important and prolific career as a pianist, arranger, composer and producer. After 14 years, Orozco moved to the United States in 2012 and enrolled, with a full tuition Assistantship, to The Peabody Institute of John Hopkins University in Baltimore, where he earned a Graduate Performance Diploma (GPD) in Jazz Piano. Since relocating to the New York tri-state area in 2015, Mr. Orozco has become an in-demand pianist. Some of the artists he has worked with include Paquito D’Rivera, Pedrito Martinez, Gary Thomas, Yosvany Terry, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Luis Enrique, Itai Kriss, Troy Roberts, Paul Bollenback, and Giovanni Hidalgo just to name a few.

Jorge Glem, who is also a mandolin player, composer and producer, is probably the greatest living master of the infectiously rhythmic four-string Venezuelan cuatro. Hailing from Cumaná, Venezuela, Glem, who currently resides in New York City, has set out with a clear and driven purpose of presenting the Venezuelan cuatro as a universal instrument. His amazing talent and purpose have allowed him to share the stage with renown worldwide figures such as Paquito D’Rivera, Jordan Rudess, Rubén Blades, Carlos Vives, Calle 13, Natalia Lafoucarde, Guaco, Desorden Público, Ensamble Gurrufío, Gualberto Ibarreto, Etienne Charles and many other important music personalities allowing him to fuse the sound of this traditional instrument in genres such as jazz, salsa, bluegrass, rock, and pop. Glem is without a doubt one of Venezuela’s musical treasures. "Glem's performance at Lincoln Center, reaffirmed his status as one of the most individualistically talented players in any style of music around the world" - New York Music Daily.

2 seatings at 615 and 8:35 with no music charge, $40 food & drink minimum per person. Reservations required.

Some of the artists he has worked with include Paquito D’Rivera, Pedrito Martinez, Gary Thomas, Alex Norris, Troy Roberts, Paul Bollenback, Itai Kriss & Telavana, Albita Rodriguez, Guaco, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Luis Enrique, Huascar Barradas, Simon Diaz, and Giovanni Hidalgo just to name a few. He has participated in more than 70 albums including six as a solo artist.

As an arranger and/or composer, Mr. Orozco has been commissioned by The Baltimore School for The Arts, the Chamber String Orchestra from the MCYO at Strathmore in Maryland, The Netherlands Blazers Ensemble (NBE), Raíces Jazz Orchestra from Miami FL, the Venezuela Symphony Orchestra, and the Frankfurt Radio Big Band among others. In 2019, he was nominated for “Best Arrangement” at the 20th Latin Grammy awards for his piece “Imprevisto”, performed and recorded by Pablo Gil & The Raices Jazz Orchestra featuring the great percussionist Tony Succar.

Kamarata Jazz is Orozco's main project, who created it back in 2006 while living in Venezuela. It was originally conceived as a quintet: piano, electric bass, drums, percussion and Venezuelan cuatro. Currently, the group alternates with performances as a trio, quartet, and quintet using a saxophone instead of the cuatro, or eventually also as a sextet including both, cuatro and saxophone. With Kamarata Jazz, Orozco has developed an innovative approach to a fusion of Venezuelan and Cuban traditional music with Jazz and other genres such as flamenco, tango, and bossa nova. The core of the repertoire is based mostly on Orozco’s original compositions, as well as arrangements of well-known Venezuelan and Cuban pieces from the traditional repertoire. César Orozco & Kamarata Jazz discography includes “Son con Pajarillo” (2007, self-release), “Orozcojam” (Guataca, 2010, awarded for Best vocal/Instrumental album at Cubadisco 2012), “No Limits for Tumbao” (Alfi Records, 2015) and the latest one "Rooted Forward", which was released in October, 2020.

Nilson Matta's Samba Night!

Swinging Bossa Nova and Latin beats start the weekend off with this trio of acclaimed musicians.

Saxophone player and composer John Snauwaert has a very wide scope and is an artistic world traveler. Thus he made acquaintance with Petar Elmazof (Bulgaria), Chergio de Susa and Pipo Fernandes (Cuba, the latter member of the B V S C), Mahbub & Satar Khan (India). He also played on stage with jazz masters as Lowell Fulson, Isaac Hurley, Jacques Pelzer, Bob Mover, Gary Smulyan, Nilson Matta, Roni Ben-Hur… As a composer and musician he worked for Koninklijke Vlaamse Schouwburg, het Muziek Lod, De Werf, Victoria, De Vieze Gasten and Circus Picolini. He loves the music/image combination and wrote music for the animated movies ‘papa trumpet’ and ‘Meme’ by Eveline Verschorre and also for ‘The Bed’ by Luc Degryze. He really can handle any genre.

Marcello Pellitteri is an exciting drummer to experience and, similarly, a professor and alumnus of the prestigious Berklee College of Music. He has performed with Grammy Winners and acclaimed musicians including: Paquito D’Rivera, Claudio Roditi, Wynton Marsalis, Slide Hampton, Woody Shaw, and many more.

Gapplegate Music writes , “The pianism of George Dulin has all the linear thrust and power of a Bud Powell, but different notes! He's rather young but his play does not sound like it. There is a fully formed vision of how to go about his art.”

Nilson Matta has worked with Trio da Paz, Yo Yo Ma, Claudio Roditi, Paquito D’Rivera, and many more. He is always a favorite of our audiences and the trio has an infectious amount of fun performing!

Eldorado Slim featuring Scott Sharrard of Little Feat & Gregg Allman Band!

This is truly a “not to be missed” performance!

Where Bill Graham’s Fillmore East meets Detroit’s Club Mozambique you will find the sounds of NYC’s, Eldorado Slim. Led by Little Feat guitarist, Scott Sharrard, the 6 piece lineup consists of some of NYC’s finest musicians. The band takes it’s name from an obscure Little Feat jam from the early ‘70’s

Sharrard describes Elorado Slim’s mix of 1970’s instrumental covers as a “blend of acid funk and space spirituals.” The band takes their sound and repertoire from one of the richest chapters in American roots music history. Inspired by the consciousness expanding and hypnotic, impovisational funk of the era, music by artists like Grant Green, Eddie Harris, Lonnie Smith, the Crusaders, Cannonball Adderley, King Curtis, Chico Hamilton and Stuff. Eldorado Slim also nods to Scott Sharrard’s work with Greg Allman and Little Feat by occasionally doing their own instrumental interpretations of tunes from those iconic rock & roll songbooks.

Since the fall of 2008, Scott Sharrard has been the touring guitarist for the Gregg Allman Band. He’s been called “One of the best guitarists in the country” by Billboard and “the next Eric Clapton or Mike Bloomfield” by the Indianapolis Star Tribune . Gregg Allman, has high praise for the guitarist. “I know all about guitar players —I’ve seen the very best — and Scott Sharrard is the perfect guitarist for my band. He understands that you don’t need to play just for the sake of playing; Scott isn’t one of those guys who thinks they’re getting paid by the note. He never steps on the vocals, and leaves plenty of room for everyone else to do their thing, but when it’s time to solo, Scott delivers, boy.” This will be the first of a summer series with Scott’s band and every show will be different and amazing!

We will offer seatings at at 6:15 and 8:45 for two separate performances at 7:00 and 9:00, respectively, along with a prix fixe menu $80 per person plus drinks, tax and gratuity. Each set will be unique. Reservations required!

Stéphane Séva Swing Ondulé Trio featuring Dan Levinson & Conal Fowkes

Stéphane Seva is the youngest member of the Paris Washboard, and the washboard player of the new generation. Through endless and vastly different musical encounters – a duo with a double-neck guitarist, for example, accompanying Benin music with harp and African drums, or scraping the corrugated metal plate to electro music with a didgeridoo player – he is writing the history of his instrument. Stéphane has two strings to his bow – singing and playing the washboard. He began his musical career with his father, playing the washboard in a traditional jazz band. Today he’s recognized as one of the specialists in France in this highly original instrument. At the same time he studied singing with the American jazz singer, Sarah Lazarus. In 2007 as a singer in an octet he recorded an album entitled ‘To Frank and Ray’, a homage to Frank Sinatra and Ray Charles. Since 1998 he has made regular appearances at jazz festivals and Parisian jazz clubs with his band ‘Swing Ondulé’, in the line-up ‘Lancelot et ses Chevaliers’ or accompanying a wide variety of musicians such as Daniel Huck or Ludovic de Preisac.
